SWORD Health Raises $25 Million in Series B to Accelerate Growth of its Best-in-Class Virtual Musculoskeletal Care Solution

The company’s funding doubled to $50 million after a year of rapid growth.

SWORD Health, the world’s fastest growing virtual musculoskeletal (MSK) care provider, has raised a $25 million financing round, bringing SWORD’s cumulative fundraising to $50 million. The round was led by Todd Cozzens, Managing Partner at Transformation Capital and former healthcare investor at Sequoia Capital. Existing investors Khosla Ventures, Founders Fund, Green Innovations, Vesalius Biocapital and Faber also participated.

SWORD Health achieved significant commercial success in the last year with eight-fold revenue growth and a nearly five-fold increase in active users in 2020, making it one of the fastest growing providers of virtual musculoskeletal care delivery. The Company will use the funds to enhance product capabilities, expand industry partnerships and drive adoption across the benefits management ecosystem with employers, health plans and alliance partners.

“This was a breakout year for SWORD Health,” said Virgilio Bento, founder and CEO of SWORD Health. “We grew our client footprint and revenue dramatically and were selected in 75 percent of evaluations we participated in by employers searching for a better way to provide musculoskeletal care to their populations. SWORD Health is now the fastest growing provider of musculoskeletal care, and this new round of funding will accelerate our mission to provide high-quality, accessible and effective musculoskeletal care to over two billion people worldwide.”

According to the World Health Organization, MSK conditions are the world’s leading cause of disability, with low back pain being its single greatest contributor. These conditions significantly impact one’s ability to work and are commonly linked to depression and other chronic health issues. Demand for digital physical therapy solutions to MSK issues skyrocketed during the pandemic and, according to the Business Group on Health, will continue to grow exponentially through 2023.

“We invested in SWORD Health because the Company is solving one of the world’s leading health issues today, musculoskeletal pain, with the most clinically comprehensive MSK digital health solution,” said Todd Cozzens, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Transformation Capital. “Our market research with employers, payers and industry partners confirmed that SWORD Health offers the leading MSK virtual therapy standard of care for the broadest set of conditions.”

At the core of SWORD Health’s leading virtual musculoskeletal solution is its FDA-listed Digital Therapist, which connects in-house Doctors of Physical Therapy to SWORD Health members via wearable motion sensors and a tablet loaded with an AI-powered therapeutic exercise program. It is the only solution clinically proven to outperform the current gold standard of care for MSK conditions – traditional physical therapy – and the only to offer rehabilitation programs for chronic, acute and post-surgical conditions of the lower back, shoulder, neck, knee, elbow, hip, ankle, wrist and lungs.

“We selected SWORD Health after a robust evaluation process because we believe they provide the safest, most engaging and most effective MSK treatment on the market,” said Jen Lamons, director of health and welfare at Concordia Plan Services. “They have been a dream to work with, and they have exceeded our expectations over the last year. I can’t wait to see what this additional funding will ultimately provide our members and the rest of the world.”

2020: SWORD Health’s Year in Review

2020 was a big year in digital health. With a pandemic disrupting every corner of the globe, American employers and health plans were forced to accelerate the shift to digital solutions that had been growing in the U.S. for several years. For SWORD Health, 2020 was an opportunity to establish ourselves as a new leader in the digital MSK market in America, and we’re proud to say that we did that, and much more.

Here are some of our highlights from 2020…

We helped thousands of members overcome their MSK pain.

We unveiled SWORD to the US market in January 2020, merely weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the nation. As with all companies, we have had to adapt to this new reality.

When the country started closing down in March, workers moved their offices to their homes, leading to surges in MSK complaints. At the same time, PT clinics closed and hospitals delayed or suspended elective surgeries and other programmed activities. Increased demand met decreased access. A perfect storm was created.

Predictably, the unfortunate trends caused by COVID-19 drove a dramatic rise in adoption of tele- and digital-health solutions. A survey by the Business Group on Health found that 71% of large employers introduced telehealth and virtual care offerings for their employees in response to the pandemic.

SWORD’s virtual physical therapy program was the perfect fit for employers and health plans that needed to provide a digital solution — an option that helped members reduce pain, cut out opioids and avoid surgeries, all from the comfort of their home. For example, one client, Concordia Plans, knew they had to move fast at the beginning of the pandemic, so we partnered with their benefits team to launch our program a mere 15 days after signing the contract. Read more about how Concordia members cut their MSK pain in half by downloading our case study or watching this webinar.

All told, our PTs delivered over 2 million minutes of physical therapy, over 100,000 physical therapy sessions, and brought virtual care to 5x more members than any previous year in SWORD’s history. All this contributed to 8x revenue growth, making SWORD the fastest-growthing MSK vendor in digital health.

We solidified our position as the most comprehensive MSK solution.

Quality virtual care is not only achievable, but can be more effective than the in-person standard as demonstrated by our clinical studies. But to really solve the MSK problem, digital solutions need to tackle as many conditions as possible to serve the needs of diverse populations.

We became the first sensor-based virtual MSK care provider to treat wrist conditions, adding to our extensive suite of therapies for neck, lower back, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle pain. We also added a structured Cognitive Behavioral Therapy program developed by psychiatrists and psychologists, called “Strong Mind, Stronger Body”, to help our members build the right mental habits to deal with their conditions and improve not only their physical health but also their mental health.

We welcomed new partners and directors to our growing team.

SWORD’s network of partners grew this year as well. We were honored to welcome Karin Ajmani to our Board of Directors and Brian Marcotte to our lead Client Advisory Board, amongst others. We also announced a partnership with Welltok’s Connect Partner ecosystem and another with Bridge Health, to both prevent unnecessary procedures and provide a continuum of excellent care before and after surgery.

We continued our investment in the security and privacy of our platform.

We became the most certified and secure digital provider of MSK care in the United States. Along with our FDA-listed class II medical device, we earned Certified Status for Information Security by HITRUST, and completed our Service Organization Control (SOC) 2 Type 2 examination with zero exceptions. We’re the only MSK provider in the space to be awarded all three.

We leaned into and leveraged our virtual roots.

The SWORD program has been digital since day one, but 2020 forced us, like everyone else, to operate in an entirely virtual world and embrace Zoom. We hosted a series of webinars to share the benefits of our solution and our member success stories. We redesigned our live booth experience with virtual booths when all conferences went digital. Despite not being able to shake anyone’s hand we gained a lot of momentum throughout the year but we’re definitely looking forward to seeing all of you at our booth, breakout session, or happy hour mixers in the future. Who knew you could miss hotel rooms, airports, and ubers?

The work paid off and our prospects, industry, and the media took notice.

We’re pretty excited that so many employers and health plans, including several Fortune 100s, decided to partner with SWORD as their MSK provider in 2020. With more attention and success came accolades that we were very honored to receive. SWORD was recognized as a Top 3 Wellness Service on Inc.’s Best in Business List, was selected as a finalist at UCSF Digital Health Awards in the Employer Wellness category, and was featured in Healthline, the NYPost, and Forbes.

Looking forward to 2021…

There is a lot of work still left to do. We recently surveyed over 1,000 adults and were surprised that a staggering 80% of respondents claimed to be suffering from some kind of MSK pain. We expect that employers will continue to look to digital solutions as a way to help their people find the care that they need. In line with that expectation, the Business Group on Health recently reported that 52% of employers they surveyed have made the implementation of virtual care solutions their top priority for 2021.

Virtual MSK care is here to stay, SWORD is at the forefront of this change, and we’re ready to meet the needs of the millions of people fighting MSK pain in America. In 2021, we will continue to expand our list of therapies, develop and implement integrations with partners, and build the most comprehensive and effective MSK solution on the market. We hope to serve you soon.

As physical pain skyrockets from long days at the home office, demand for virtual solutions to musculoskeletal (MSK) pain is booming. A survey by Business Group on Health found 71 percent of large employers accelerated telehealth and virtual care offerings for their employees, while 52 percent made the implementation of more virtual care solutions their top priority for 2021. Virtual MSK care has seen the largest growth over the last year and is expected to see exponential growth in the years to come.

SWORD Health, a virtual MSK care provider, has quickly gained traction in the market, leading to exponential growth over the last year with eight-fold revenue growth and a nearly five-fold increase in active users in 2020.

“Nearly three out of four potential clients that have evaluated SWORD Health against the competition have chosen our solution,” said Virgilio Bento, CEO of SWORD Health. “Self-insured employers are prioritizing high quality clinical-grade care that is convenient, utilizes licensed physical therapists at every touchpoint, and reduces costs for themselves and their members.”

The company’s comprehensive virtual physical therapy solution, which pairs its members with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, a set of wearable motion sensors, and a tablet that provides them with a dynamic therapeutic exercise program, is the only solution clinically proven to outperform traditional physical therapy. Its technology is FDA-cleared to treat all musculoskeletal patients, and currently offers rehabilitation programs for chronic, acute, and post-surgical conditions of the lower back, shoulder, neck, knee, elbow, hip, ankle, wrist, and lungs.

“SWORD Health outshines every other virtual musculoskeletal solution that has emerged over the last few years,” said Brian Marcotte, SWORD Health Industry Advisory Board Member and former President and CEO of Business Group on Health. “Its comprehensive clinical model leverages physical therapists throughout a patient’s journey making SWORD Health a truly virtual physical therapy solution.”

SWORD Health and BridgeHealth Partner to Provide High Quality Musculoskeletal Care to Surgery Candidates

The partnership will both prevent unnecessary procedures and provide a continuum of excellent care before and after surgery.

Today, SWORD Health is partnering with BridgeHealth, a company that provides surgical advocacy, guidance, and Centers of Excellence (COE) programs to employees at large, self-insured companies. BridgeHealth improves employers’ access to medical COEs, so their members can get the highest quality surgical care for their condition regardless of insurance limitations and without excessive financial burdens.

“Partnerships like this one are fundamental to a stronger healthcare ecosystem,” said Virgilio Bento, SWORD Health CEO. “Bridge Health makes high quality surgical care accessible and affordable, making it a natural fit with SWORD Health’s musculoskeletal virtual care programs. Together, we can build a high quality musculoskeletal care pathway for everyone, independent of where they are in their recovery journey.”

Physical therapy is the most effective solution for most musculoskeletal issues, but patients are often either unaware of noninvasive treatment methods or have limited access to physical therapy due to cost, inconvenience or other constraints. The partnership between SWORD Health and BridgeHealth offers surgical candidates the highest quality end-to-end care. BridgeHealth members can access SWORD Health’s virtual physical therapy programs as a preventative measure before they choose to elect surgery. They also have access to clinical-grade prehabilitation programs to help prepare them for surgery, as well as post-surgical rehabilitation programs to speed up their recovery.

“A quality physical therapy program can both eliminate unnecessary surgeries and significantly improve surgical outcomes,” said Jamie Hall, President and CEO of BridgeHealth. “This partnership offers members an in-home, clinical-grade physical therapy program that improves completion rates and outcomes , improving the likelihood of success at every stage of their surgical journey.”

SWORD Health is the only virtual physical therapy platform that combines expert physical therapists and motion sensors to deliver treatment to its members, as well as the only solution that is clinically proven to outperform traditional physical therapy. In clinical trials, the company’s post-surgical and other rehabilitation programs were found to be 30 percent more effective, with higher retention rates (54 percent more) than in-person therapy. While the company’s goal is to help eliminate unnecessary surgeries through their high quality musculoskeletal care model, there will always be members who need surgery. The company’s partnership with BridgeHealth enables the very best outcomes for those members before and after their surgery.

The list, which can be found in the Winter issue of Inc. (on newsstands December 29, 2020), recognizes small- and medium-size privately held American businesses that have had a superlative impact on their communities, their industries, the environment, or society as a whole.

Scott Omelianuk, editor-in-chief of Inc., says, “It’s been an incredibly challenging year for companies. Across industries, businesses have had to make brutally tough decisions and face unprecedented uncertainty. For Best in Business, companies have prioritized tackling today’s problems to lead us to a better future, even if they’ve struggled to stay in the black.”

Inc.’s editors reviewed the companies’ achievements over the past year and noted how they made a positive difference in the world. They then selected honorees in more than 30 different industries–health, software, retail, business services, and more–and in age- and revenue-based categories. The applicant pool was very competitive, with around 2,700 entries and an acceptance rate in the low single digits—a huge success for these honors in their inaugural year.

SWORD Health was recognized for making physical therapy more accessible and affordable, curbing reliance on opioids, reducing inequalities in treatment, and improving physical health outcomes for many who wouldn’t have had the option until now.

“We are proud to be recognized among this group of companies making a positive difference in the world. Musculoskeletal pain is on the rise, and too many Americans are going without care. At SWORD, we believe that everyone should have access to high-quality care, and we’re grateful to Inc. for helping us advance our mission” said Virgílio Bento, Founder and CEO, SWORD Health.

SWORD Health joins Welltok’s Connect Partner Ecosystem

SWORD Health Joins Welltok’s Connect Partner Ecosystem to Address Growing Needs for Virtual Pain Therapy

SWORD Health, a leading virtual musculoskeletal (MSK) care provider, today announced a partnership with Welltok, the consumer activation platform, to help make clinical-grade virtual MSK care more accessible to Americans in pain. As employers increasingly seek virtual healthcare solutions, this partnership makes it easier for them to find and provide the best and most comprehensive remote services to help keep their employees healthy and reduce healthcare costs.

“Employers have been paying billions for medical procedures to help their employees battle musculoskeletal pain and stay well,” said Virgilio Bento, CEO of SWORD Health. “Our partnership with Welltok can not only help employers realize massive cost savings, it will help their employees find relief and stay productive during a time when work-from-home injuries are on the rise and in-person care for musculoskeletal conditions is more limited than ever.”

SWORD Health takes the gold standard for musculoskeletal (MSK) care – therapeutic exercise and education – and adapts it for the way we live today. It is the first virtual solution to pair members with a licensed physical therapist and the company’s Digital Therapist, an FDA-listed device with a tablet and wearable motion sensors. The Digital Therapist guides the member through a program that’s been designed just for them by their physical therapist, and they get live feedback on their performance as they go. After every session, their physical therapist analyzes their performance, updates their program and gives them 1:1 clinical guidance and education through the SWORD Health app.

SWORD Health is the only virtual MSK solution that addresses chronic and post-surgical conditions of the lower back, shoulder, neck, knee, elbow, hip, ankle and lungs. The company will be adding a program for wrist conditions in December 2020.

“We selected SWORD Health to join our ecosystem program because we were impressed with their hands-on approach to virtual physical therapy,” said Winston Ball, Vice President of Connect Partner Ecosystem for Welltok. “With more people stressed and sedentary throughout the day, physical pain is manifesting in news ways creating a high need for coaching and support.”

SWORD will be available as an option for employers to add-on through Welltok’s Connect Partner Ecosystem on the consumer activation platform.

SWORD Health adds wrist therapy to its virtual musculoskeletal care solution

SWORD Health to Relieve Pandemic-Induced Carpal Tunnel Syndrome by Adding Wrist Therapy to its Virtual Musculoskeletal Care Solution

The innovation will make SWORD Health the first sensor-based virtual musculoskeletal care (MSK) provider to treat wrist conditions.

Complaints of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and other wrist conditions are on the rise since people bolted from their ergonomically-designed workspaces earlier this year. Up to 25 percent of workers are affected by the condition: 10-20 percent of manual workers and 5-21 percent of information workers.

In response, SWORD Health, a leading virtual MSK care provider, is expanding their suite of treatments to include a remotely-delivered program for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and other common wrist conditions. The new treatment will give SWORD Health clients the ability to treat up to 53 percent more of their eligible employees and members than other sensor-based digital MSK solutions.

“Wrist conditions were already debilitating for workers before the pandemic. Now the issue is more urgent, and access to safe, effective care is more limited,” said Virgílio Bento, Chief Executive Officer of SWORD Health. “This groundbreaking new therapy will not only massively reduce costs for employers and health plans. It will help people live healthier, more productive lives.”

Treatments for wrist conditions are currently limited to surgeries and specialist rehabilitation programs, costing the healthcare system more than $2 billion annually. Untreated, these conditions can have a serious impact on productivity: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is responsible for the highest number of lost workdays among all work-related injuries. SWORD Health’s wrist therapy program will allow its members to relieve Carpal Tunnel and other wrist conditions without surgery or imaging.

The solution extends SWORD Health’s clinical-grade virtual MSK care program, which provides non-invasive relief for chronic and post-surgical conditions of the lower back, shoulder, neck, knee, elbow, hip, ankle and lungs through therapeutic exercise, education, behavioral coaching and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. The programs are delivered by licensed Doctors of Physical Therapy and have proven to be more effective than the gold standard of in-person care.

SWORD Health’s wrist therapy program will be available December 1, 2020 to U.S. employers and health plans. The company’s full virtual musculoskeletal care program is currently available to U.S. employers and health plans.

SWORD Health becomes the only digital musculoskeletal care provider with HITRUST®, SOC 2 and FDA certifications

SWORD Health, a leading provider of digital musculoskeletal (MSK) care, today announced SWORD Health’s digital therapy platform and several of its applications have earned Certified status for information security by HITRUST.

The company also completed its Service Organization Control (SOC) 2 Type 2 examination with zero exceptions. The independent audit confirmed SWORD Health’s digital therapy platform meets the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Trust Service Principles and Criteria for System and Organization Control.

These achievements, coupled with SWORD Health’s FDA-listed class II medical device, distinguish SWORD Health as the most certified and secure digital provider of MSK care in the United States.

“SWORD Health is committed to the highest medical standards in all aspects of care, and that includes the privacy and security of our patients’ information,” said Virgilio Bento, SWORD Health’s CEO. “Earning HITRUST CSF Certified™ status and SOC 2 compliance demonstrates to our customers and patients that they can have confidence in industry-recognized, gold standards of safety, security, privacy, and care.”

HITRUST CSF Certified status demonstrates that SWORD Health’s digital therapy platform has met key regulations and industry-defined requirements and is appropriately managing risk. By including federal and state regulations, standards and frameworks and incorporating a risk-based approach, the HITRUST CSF® helps organizations address these challenges through a comprehensive and flexible framework of prescriptive and scalable security controls.

“HITRUST helps organizations meet the highest standards of information protection requirements whenever sensitive data is accessed or stored,” stated Jeremy Huval, Chief Compliance Officer, HITRUST. “We recognize SWORD Health as a company that customers and patients can count on to keep their information safe.”

An open letter to the digital musculoskeletal care industry

We’re on the threshold of a revolution in musculoskeletal (MSK) care. The recent acquisitions, funding, and lofty plans from digital providers are signals that the market is waking up to what those of us at the forefront have known all along – digital solutions can solve the physical health crisis in this country.

This is our moment, and we get one shot to do it right. We must remember that MSK conditions are serious, and the consequences of mistreatment have cost us billions of dollars and countless lives. Solving this problem requires nothing less than the highest level of quality and care.

At SWORD, we’ve been delivering clinical-grade MSK care for five years on three continents, treating thousands of patients with chronic, acute and post-surgical conditions. We promised early on that we would always provide the highest quality of care to our members, and when we make promises, we keep them.

So today, I urge us all to make promises we can keep.

Let’s promise to treat our members with real clinicians, and only clinicians. At SWORD, our members only interact with a licensed physical therapist – never a health coach or other non-clinician – and they only ever will. The MSK system is complex, and diagnosing and treating these conditions requires deep expertise. Putting MSK sufferers in the care of non-clinicians puts members at risk of being misdiagnosed, incorrectly treated and poorly monitored. Having a clinician present for only part of the journey isn’t enough, because non-clinicians can fail to recognize patterns that may be signs of more serious issues. This means we all need to employ enough physical therapists to ensure that every member gets their own PT, and the number of PTs should far exceed the number of clients.

Let’s promise to invest in the safety and precision of our technology. We’ve gone to great lengths to ensure our sensors are safe and precise enough to provide clinical-grade care. SWORD’s Digital Therapist is an FDA-listed class II medical device. Certification is a lengthy and costly process: it took SWORD over a year to certify our sensor technology. We invest time and energy in certifying our sensors for medical use because we believe it is absolutely necessary to guarantee the best care possible. We urge others in the industry to do the same, for the health and safety of their members.

Let’s promise not to rush new treatments to market. Our solution already covers all the major MSK conditions – those affecting back, shoulder, neck, knee, hip, ankle and elbow – at any point in the journey, from prevention, to acute conditions, to chronic pain, to recovering from surgery. These programs were years in the making, and included rigorous internal and clinical testing and refinement to ensure safety and efficacy. We didn’t launch them until we were certain they could be used the very next day. We counsel the industry to take great care in developing each new treatment, recognizing that the needs of chronic, acute and post-surgical patients are unique, and each new treatment needs to be developed with care.

Let’s promise to validate our solutions against the gold standard of care. If you believe, as we do, that digital solutions deserve to become the new standard of care, the only way we’ll achieve this is by validating our programs in clinical trials against the current gold standard – traditional physical therapy. We have validated our solution against traditional PT and found it to be 30% more effective. This complements our market data – both clinical studies and real-world outcomes are needed to prove the validity and quality. Clinical trials with no control group, or where the control group receives no treatment, aren’t to be taken as proof the solution works better than the best care. They’re only proof that the solution is better than nothing at all. Controlled clinical studies are expensive and time-consuming to run, but we urge you all to invest in them.

Developing truly clinical-grade treatments takes dedication, integrity and time – and most importantly, it takes commitment at the core.

Since Day 1, we have been committed to providing a clinical-grade digital treatment, never taking shortcuts, never pretending to be something we’re not, and always keeping our promises.

At SWORD, we promise we’ll always provide clinical-grade care, for the health and safety of our members, and we hope that the rest of the industry can keep their promises, too.

Digital MSK: this is our moment. Let’s make it matter.

Yours in health,
V

At the Business Group, Brian established the Health Innovations Forum, which helped accelerate market traction for promising digital health startups, and the Executive Committee on Value Purchasing, a cross-industry council focused on shifting the market toward value-based pricing and provider accountability. Prior to the Business Group, Brian was the Vice President of Compensation and Benefits for Honeywell International where he implemented innovative solutions to help employees maximize their experience with the healthcare delivery system.

“Virtual care is taking off, and COVID-19 is giving it a jump start. We’re seeing an explosion of digital solutions in the MSK space, but SWORD stands apart because they provide virtual MSK care at the level of quality that employers, plans and members require,” said Brian. “SWORD has the potential to help make physical therapy accessible to millions of people, drastically improving outcomes and reducing unnecessary expenses, and I am excited to bring together the industry’s best to help them do it.”

Brian will establish and preside over SWORD’s Client Advisory Board, bringing together a cross-section of industry stakeholders to understand their current challenges and future needs, and collaborating with SWORD’s leadership team on strategy, innovation and go-to-market initiatives that will benefit the entire market.

“We have spent years developing a clinical-grade solution that members love, but we’re far from finished. We want to keep innovating, and we know we need to do it right,” said Virgílio Bento, Founder and CEO, SWORD Health. “Brian is one of the most respected leaders in the employer benefits space, and he understands the needs of employers, plans, providers and members like nobody else. Under Brian’s stewardship, SWORD will be able to keep pushing the envelope in a way that delivers value to all.”

Brian’s appointment follows the appointment of several industry leaders to SWORD’s executive and advisory teams, including Karin Ajmani, former President and Chief Strategy Officer at Progyny.
