Sword has announced a national partnership with Portugal's National Health Service (NHS) to make its AI MSK care solution available to over 10 million Portuguese patients. The partnership marks a significant milestone for Sword, which started in Portugal over a decade ago before expanding across the US and into health systems across Europe. Now integrated into the country’s NHS at national scale, Sword becomes Portugal's leading AI MSK care provider.
The estimated impact on the system is substantial: waiting times to begin treatment are projected to fall by 97%, with state savings of around 45% compared to conventional care models.
Under the agreement, any NHS physician can prescribe Sword's AI physiotherapy to patients managing conditions such as lower back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, sprains, and muscle strains, and others. Sword's clinical team supervises each treatment program, adjusting therapeutic plans as needed, while real-time AI analysis monitors and corrects exercise execution during sessions.
"The future of the NHS depends directly on our capacity to innovate and put technology at the service of patients, reducing distances and increasing access to healthcare. By overcoming this historic barrier and integrating Sword, a Portuguese company with global success, as an ally of the NHS, we are taking a decisive step in the fight against inequalities in access. It is a source of motivation for this Government to build the future of healthcare with the best that is being done in the world," said Minister of Health Ana Paula Martins.
Sword has now treated close to one million members from over 55 countries, across over 13 million AI Care sessions, backed by 58 peer-reviewed clinical studies. This historic partnership adds a national health service to a client base that already includes 20% of Fortune 500 companies, major health insurers, and the US Armed Forces, and brings Sword's work full circle in the country where it started.
"More than 10 years ago, we started in Portugal with a clear and urgent mission: to solve the problem of limited access to quality healthcare in a traditional system that is not scalable. From today, all Portuguese citizens can count on our solution within the NHS and recover from physical pain, with no barriers to treatment," noted Virgilio Bento, founder and CEO of Sword Health.
