Diogo Gonçalves

Diogo Gonçalves is a Lead ML Engineer at Sword Health, where he builds and scales the AI systems behind the company's AI Care platform. His work spans conversational AI and agentic system design — translating complex clinical requirements into production systems that deliver care reliably and safely at scale.

Diogo has been part of Sword's AI engineering organization since 2020, progressing through successive engineering roles as the platform grew from digital therapy into a multi-condition AI Care platform. His contributions range from the classical ML models and data pipelines to Phoenix, the AI Care Specialist that guides members through their treatment journeys.

He approaches ML engineering with the conviction that a system is only as good as what it does under real-world conditions. Imperfect environments, varied users, the full complexity of people trying to get better. That is the standard.

Education

Diogo holds a Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering from the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP). His MSc thesis, completed at Sword Health, applied machine learning to classify patient emotional states during digital physical rehabilitation from large-scale behavioral data.

Experience

Diogo joined Sword Health in 2020 as an MSc Thesis Student and has held successive roles across the AI engineering organization, progressing from junior engineer to Lead ML Engineer. His early work included building human motion tracking and analysis systems and classical ML models powering Sword's care-management platform. Today, his focus is on the generative AI and conversational systems behind Sword's AI Care platform.

Before Sword, he completed a research traineeship at the Centre for Rehabilitation Engineering at the University of Glasgow, working on clinical research in functional electrical stimulation and diaphragm kinetics.
