Balance

Balance is your body's ability to maintain a stable, controlled position — whether you're standing still, moving through space, or recovering from an unexpected shift in weight.

What balance involves and why it changes over time

Maintaining balance isn't the job of any single system — it draws on input from your inner ear, your vision, and sensory receptors in your joints and muscles that tell your brain where your body is in space. Your brain processes all of that information continuously and makes constant, small adjustments to keep you upright. Balance naturally becomes more of a challenge as you get older, but it can also be affected by injury, surgery, or pain that changes how you move and load your joints. When balance is off, the risk of falls increases — and so does the strain on muscles and joints that compensate to keep you steady.

How Sword Health can help

Balance is trainable, and a physical therapist can assess where your stability is breaking down and design a program specifically for you. Sword connects you with that expertise from home, so improving your balance doesn't require a commute or a waiting room.
