Deltoids

Carolina Moreira

The deltoids are the large, triangular muscles that wrap around the top of your shoulder, giving it its rounded shape and powering nearly every direction of arm movement.

What your deltoids do and why they matter for shoulder health

Your deltoids cover the front, side, and back of your shoulder joint, and each portion does something slightly different. The front portion helps lift your arm forward, the middle portion raises it out to the side, and the rear portion pulls your arm back behind you. Together, they're the primary movers for most overhead and reaching movements, and they work alongside the rotator cuff to keep your shoulder stable during those actions. When the deltoids are weak or not activating evenly across all three portions, the shoulder joint absorbs more stress than it should — which over time contributes to impingement, rotator cuff strain, and the kind of low-grade aching that gets worse with repeated overhead work.

How Sword Health can help

A physical therapist can assess how your deltoids are functioning relative to the rest of your shoulder and design a targeted program to address any imbalances. Sword makes that evaluation and ongoing guidance available from home, so you can work on shoulder strength and mechanics without a commute.
