Fascia

Carolina Moreira

Fascia is a continuous web of dense connective tissue that surrounds and connects your muscles, organs, nerves, and bones, providing structure, support, and the ability to transmit force throughout the body.

What fascia does, why fascia stretching matters, and what happens when it's restricted

Fascia is woven through every layer of your body, from just beneath the skin down to the deepest muscles, and it plays an active role in transmitting movement and force across structures. When fascia is healthy, it's flexible and slides easily against surrounding tissues — which is why fascia stretching and mobility work can be meaningful parts of recovery. When it becomes restricted — from injury, surgery, prolonged immobility, or inflammation — it can create pulling sensations, limit range of motion, and contribute to pain patterns that seem disconnected from any single muscle or joint. The fascia surrounding your hip, for example, can influence how your knee feels and how your lower back loads — which is part of why pain so often shows up somewhere other than where the actual restriction is.

How Sword Health can help

Addressing fascial restriction often requires hands-on assessment and a targeted movement strategy. A physical therapist can identify where restrictions are limiting your movement and work with you to restore tissue mobility and function. Sword connects you with that expertise from home, with a clinical specialist overseeing your progress.
