Physical therapist

Carolina Moreira

A physical therapist is a licensed healthcare provider who assesses, diagnoses, and treats movement problems, pain, and physical dysfunction through therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, and evidence-based rehabilitation.

What a physical therapist does and how they approach care

Physical therapists are trained to assess the whole movement system — not just the site of pain — to understand what's driving a problem and what will actually resolve it. A typical evaluation includes a detailed history, movement assessment, strength and flexibility testing, and hands-on examination of the affected area and the structures around it. From that assessment, a physical therapist builds an individualized plan that typically includes targeted exercise, education about the condition, and often manual techniques to restore mobility or reduce pain. Physical therapists work with people across the full range of musculoskeletal conditions — from acute injuries and post-surgical recovery to chronic pain, sports performance, and pelvic care. In most states, you can see a physical therapist directly without a physician referral.
